IP TRAINING WORKSHOP

On 17Jul25, IP Whiz organised a workshop in the capital Amman for Jordanian enforcement authorities on how to identify counterfeit products.

A total of 23 officers participated from Customs at Aqaba Port, Amman Airport and Dry Port, as well as Jordan Standards & Metrology Organisation (JSMO) including the Head of its Anti-counterfeiting Division.

Actively engaging in discussions and exercises throughout the session, the officers demonstrated their dedication to tackling counterfeits in order to protect consumers, ensure fair trade and safeguard intellectual property rights in Jordan.

A TOUGH NEIGHBOURHOOD

Jordan lies between Iraq to its east; Israel and the West Bank to its west; Syria to its north; and Saudi Arabia to its south.

The country hosts a large number of refugees (primarily from Syria but also Iraq, Yemen, Sudan and Somalia) amounting to over 10% of its 11.5 million population, making it one of the top refugee-hosting countries per capita globally.

It has a long history of surviving wars, thriving on cross-regional trade, and extending brotherly love to its neighbours.

PHILADELPHIA - THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE

Amman was known as Philadelphia for 900 years, from the 3rd century BC until the 7th century AD:

  • Previously called Rabbath Ammon, in 255 BC the city was conquered and rebuilt by the Macedonian Greek ruler of Egypt, Ptolemy II, whose nickname was Philadelphus. He renamed the city after himself: "Philadelphia", which means "brotherly love" in Greek.
  • Philadelphia was conquered by the Romans under Pompey in 63 BC. The Temple of Hercules on the Amman Citadel was built by the Romans around 165 AD and was dedicated to the co-emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
  • During the Islamic era in the 630s AD, the Rashidun Caliphate conquered the region and restored the city's ancient Semitic name, Amman.
